Experience

I have tutored students since my first semester in college and I will be graduating spring 2021. I have tutored students in preschool all the way through students working toward their GED. I am passionate about helping future generations build a strong future for themselves through their education. The growth I have seen in students has amazed me and I want to see this in many more students in the future. The confidence that can come from realizing they actually can do that math problem or they can read that book can push them to strive for success in their education. A little encouragement and sometimes unique ways of teaching a tough concept can go a long way. I want students to know how smart they are and how far they can go if they keep working at the challenges put in front of them. I have tutored at a homeless shelter, an after-school program in inner-city Columbus, and in the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) where I was promoted to being the assistant to my site director. At the after-school program, I mostly helped with homework. At the homeless shelter, I would help with homework, read with the students, and help the young ones with their letters, shapes, and numbers. Children would come in with homework requiring them to simply trace letters but they couldn't even tell me what letter they were tracing. When things like this would happen, we would start from the beginning to learn the letters of the alphabet. It amazed me how easily children could slip through the cracks in school. At the JDC, I've worked with students who often started around a first-grade math or reading level but after just 30 minutes per week for a month, they were at least doing division in math but many could do more by that point. It is startling to me how many children are ‘drug behind’ in the American public school system. If just 30 minutes, one time a week made such a difference in the lives of “criminals,” why can’t we help before they end up in a situation like that. Having an education opens so many doors that wouldn’t be open otherwise. You are offered opportunities that make you want to be great because you can see a bright future ahead. I want to be a part of a program that helps children realize their potential and gain confidence in themselves that they will carry with them for years to come.

Hobbies

I love animals, I started dog sitting as soon as I turned 18 and that is mainly how I have put myself through college up to this point. I have three big dogs, two cats, and a turtle. I like to go camping with my family, especially when there are fun areas to explore with my dogs at the campground. I definitely consider myself a nerd. I took AP classes in high school and actually enjoyed them. I like to proofread papers and help students reach their full potential in their writing. Although I do love to hang out with my friends and go to fun places. The only way I can do that is by being super organized and on top of my work. I haven't always been that way, but once I realized how much it helps me keep up with things and balance my school and work life, I knew I had to keep going. Now it is a way of life and helps a lot with keeping my stress levels down as I take a full course load every semester while working multiple jobs.
